Abstract:
Every second of the day, video data are being captured by CCTV cameras, cell phones, and electron microscopes. Intelligent analytics on these data offers unprecedented opportunities for understanding the world and conducting scientific discoveries. Examples of intelligent video analytics include but are not limited to surveillance, sports analytics, business investigation, and biomedical image understanding. In this talk, I will present a series of my work on intelligent video analytics, which comprises three main tasks: detection, tracking and behavior analytics. I will first describe the inherent correlations of these tasks, and then focus on my work on tracking. Specifically, I will discuss tracking multiple targets in videos, a crucial yet challenging step for understanding targets' behaviors. As illustrations, I will demonstrate a wide domain of applications, ranging from tracking players and ball in team sports to tracking cells in microscopic images. I will conclude the talk by showing the future research directions.
Biography:
Xinchao Wang is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Thomas Huang's group at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He received a PhD from the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2015 advised by Prof. Pascal Fua, and a first class honorable degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) in 2010, advised by Prof. Zhu Li and Prof. Dacheng Tao. His research interests include computer vision, multimedia, big data analytics, pattern recognition and machine learning. He has published first-authored articles in top journals such as TPAMI, TIP and TMI, and oral-presentation papers in top conferences such as CVPR and ECCV. He received the Outstanding Overseas Scholar Award of the Hundred Talents program by the Chinese Academic of Sciences (CAS) in 2016, and the prestigious Swiss NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2015. Xinchao and his teammates developed a tracking system that is adopted by NBA and covered by the press including the Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the ABC News.
