Abstract:

Business Analytics is broadly defined as the use of data and computation to make optimal business decisions. While ideas and methods from more than half a century of computational mathematics research have been selectively exploited to build business optimization solutions in the past, the focus has recently shifted significantly and quickly to data-intensive and data-driven analytics. Extracting actionable insights from large-scale volume, variety, and velocity of data, in context, beyond what was previously possible, is being enabled by modern machine learning and data mining methodologies, and driving new approaches to building optimization-based decision-support systems. This talk will present a perspective on this trend and projected outlook, based on ongoing and recent work in our research labs.

Bio:

Dr. Chid Apte is Director of Analytics Research in the IBM Research Division, at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. Dr. Apte has extensive experience as a research scientist and technical leader in the data mining and business intelligence industry with significant expertise in predictive analytics solutions for insurance, finance, retail, manufacturing, and healthcare. He has led several projects to develop analytics extensions for IBM鈥檚 Information Management and Business Analytics software product portfolio, and develop novel data mining solutions for IBM鈥檚 clients. Dr. Apte received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Rutgers University, a B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay), and is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology.
