Title: High Performance Computing: Where are We Going?

Abstract:

Five years ago, Michigan State University made its commitment to develop a High Performance Computing Center. At this five-year juncture, it is important that the community evaluate the center and discuss where it might be directed in the near future. This is especially true given the rapid pace of technology and the changing needs of the university. Why have such a center? Who should it serve? What facilities (hardware or otherwise) should it provide? Most importantly, what role can high performance computing play in research, all research, here at MSU? How can computer scientists help? How can other scientists help? Finally, how can both groups work together to address problems that fundamentally require more and more computing. 

Biography: 

Dr. Bill Punch is Director of the Michigan State University High Performance Computing Center (www.hpcc.msu.edu) and an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at MSU. He also co-directs the Genetic Algorithms Research and Applications Group (GARAGe). His main interests are genetic algorithms and genetic programming, including theoretical issues (parallel GA/GP) and application issues (design, layout, scheduling, etc.), as well as data mining. Dr. Punch received the PhD degree in Computer Science from the Ohio State University in 1989.
