IPSViz: After-Action Review for Human-Virtual Human Experiences

Abstract
In this talk, I propose pairing after-action review with human-virtual human (H-VH) experiences. H-VH experiences are seeing increased use for interpersonal skills training in a variety of application domains, including military leadership, cultural competency, law enforcement, and medicine. Adding after-action review to H-VH experiences improves training by enabling end-users to review, evaluate, and get feedback on their interpersonal skills.
The interpersonal scenario visualizer (IPSViz), a visualization system that supports after-action review of H-VH experiences, is presented. IPSViz supports after-action review by generating visualizations that highlight communication between a human and a virtual human. IPSViz builds upon my previous work on a training system that allows medical students to practice patient interviews by interacting with virtual human patients. Immediately after interviewing a virtual human patient, medical students use IPSViz to review their interview and gain insight into their interpersonal communication skills. The results of a user study (N=27) indicate that after-action review with IPSViz: 1) changes end-user perceptions of their interactions with virtual humans and 2) has the potential to improve end-user interactions with real humans.
Biography
Andrew B. Raij is a Ph.D. candidate in the Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering Department at the University of Florida. His research areas include virtual environments, human-computer interaction, information visualization, and computer graphics. Raij received his B.S. in Computer Science from Northwestern University (2001) and his M.S. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2003). His mentors include Dr. Benjamin Watson (B.S.); Dr. Henry Fuchs, Herman Towles, Dr. Marc Pollefeys (M.S.); and Dr. Benjamin Lok (Ph.D.).
