Xiaoming Liu and Anil Jain have been awarded a grant from Facebook

Xiaoming Liu, Professor in Computer Science and Engineering, and Anil Jain, University Distinguished Professor in Computer Science and Engineering, have been awarded a grant for a project entitled “Manipulated Face Detection" from Facebook.   

Human faces play an important role in human-human communication and association of side information with identity. However, these advances entice malicious actors to manipulate face images, such that they can impersonate as the genuine user. Manipulation of facial images and video is ubiquitous and is of growing concern in social media. Deep learning based approaches can now provide realism of face manipulation and enabled the rapid and far-reaching dissemination of “fake news'', such as DeepFake technology. The goal of this project is to develop effective visual forensics solutions against threats from face image/video manipulation.
