Reid recognized as MSURA Volunteer of the Year

CSE Professor Emeritus and founding chairperson Richard Reid was named the 2006 MSU Retirees Association (MSURA) Volunteer of the Year. Reid modernized the association's computer system and has been instrumental in helping the MSURA keep track of its members by implementing new mailing procedures and updating mailing lists.

Reid came to MSU in 1956 as an electrical engineering PhD student and instructor. Over the next forty-three years, he was influential in advancing the university's computing capabilities and enhancing the quality of undergraduate education in computer science. In addition to being a founding member of the Computer Science Department and serving as the department's first chairperson, he helped design and build MISTIC, MSU's first computer. He coached the MSU ACM Programming Team for nearly two decades and received the CSE Department's first College of Engineering Withrow Teaching Excellence Award. Reid retired in 1999 and continues to serve MSU as an active member of both the MSURA and the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association.
