CSE students and Tang win Best Paper Award

A paper first authored by a PhD student Hamid Karimi from the Data Science and Engineering (DSE) Lab won the best paper from the 2018 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2018), which is held in Barcelona, Spain, 28-31 August, 2018. Other coauthors include Courtland Vandam (a MSU PhD student), Liyang Ye ( a MSU undergraduate student working with the DSE Lab) and Jiliang Tang ( Assistant Professor in CSE).

Social media platforms like Twitter have become a widely used medium for the exchange of information, but they have also become valuable tools for hackers to spread misinformation through compromised accounts. Hence, detecting compromised accounts is a necessary step toward a safe and secure social media environment. In the paper, an End-to-End framework is proposed, which can coherently harness the power of social media to accurately detect compromised accounts.
