Liu and Shafiq receive patent on optimizing cellular network architecture
Alex X. Liu, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University, and Zubair Shafiq, former Ph.D. student of Alex X. Liu in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University, currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Iowa, have been issued a patent entitled "Optimization of Cellular Network Architecture Based on Device Type-Specific Traffic Dynamics", in collaboration with researchers Jia Wang and Lusheng Ji from AT&T Labs. The patent is for a method of optimizing a cellular network architecture based on device type-specific traffic dynamics. The method obtains network traffic data for different endpoint device types, and predicts future traffic patterns for different device types. The method then adjusts parameters of the cellular network architecture in response to the future traffic pattern predicted for the endpoint device types.
