Aktulga and Balasubramaniam receive AFRL project

H. Metin Atkuga, Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Engineering, and Shanker Balasubramaniam, Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, have been awarded a grant for a project entitled "Highly Efficient Parallel MLFMA for Computational Electromagnetics" from Riverside Research under a prime agreement from the Air Force Research Lab.

Rapid solution to Laplace equations using the fast multipole method (FMM) has had a profound impact on several disciplines, from gravitational physics to molecular dynamics to geophysics to electrical engineering. Given these advances in FMM for systems that can be modeled using static potentials, similar high performance FMM codes for oscillatory potentials do not exist. The footprint of such codes will be significant, as oscillatory potentials arise in a wide array of problems relevant to modern technology, ranging from Terahertz technology to Radio frequency systems to imaging (optical/acoustic) and radars. The goal of this project is to develop a geometry and architecture agnostic scalable framework for N-body problems with oscillatory potentials through synergistic research in numerical methods and parallel algorithms.
