DeCann and Ross win Best Paper Award at WIFS 2013

Brian DeCann of West Virginia University and Arun Ross, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University won the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Workshop on Information Forensics and Security (WIFS) - http://www.wifs13.org for the paper "De-Duplication Errors in a Biometric System: An Investigative Study" . De-duplication refers to the process in which duplicate identities in a biometric database are automatically identified and merged/removed. This has applications in large-scale biometric applications such as border control systems, welfare disbursement systems and identity management systems. The paper by DeCann and Ross shows that traditional error metrics cannot be reliably used to predict the accuracy of biometric matchers in de-duplication applications. The paper also presents an explanation for this observation.
