MSU WIC Receives a Symantec Student Seed Fund Award from NCWIT

August 2012 - The MSU Women in Computing (WIC) was selected by the National Council for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) to receive a Symantec Student Seed Fund Award. The award will enable WIC to expand their very successful Technology Workshop for Middle School Girls to include many more girls across the state. WIC will host students from other Michigan universities and colleges to observe and participate in teaching two technology workshops this year. The workshops teach middle-school girls basic programming skills with Scratch and how to build their own website with HTML and CSS. Surveys show that the workshop piques the girls' interest in computing and boosts their confidence. WIC leaders hope the visiting students will replicate the technology workshops at their own colleges and universities.

NCWIT works to correct the imbalance of gender diversity in technology and computing. Funding for the student seed awards is provided by a partnership with Symantec.
