Knoester named CSE Outstanding Graduate Student

David B. Knoester, a doctoral student with a dual major in computer science and engineering and ecology, evolutionary Biology and Behavior, was named the 2011 Computer Science and Engineering Outstanding Graduate Student. David has conducted seminal research in "harnessing" evolutionary computation to help design more robust distributed computing systems, specifically, sensors and robots that interact with the physical world.

His contributions have gained the attention of both the research community and the popular press. Among his 17 publications, two have received best paper awards and a third has been nominated for a best paper award. His recent publication on the evolution of synchronization was recently highlighted on Wired.com.
CSE professor Philip McKinley is his adviser.
