Ofria receives Teacher-Scholar Award

Charles Ofria was awarded the Teacher-Scholar Award at Michigan State University’s annual Awards Convocation ceremony on Thursday, February 9, 2006. Teacher-Scholar Awards are presented to six faculty members who have earned the respect of students and colleagues for their devotion to and skill in teaching. The purpose of the award is to recognize the best teachers who have served at MSU for seven years or less.

Ofria has established himself as a distinguished scholar, a talented teacher, and a visionary leader. His work has received international media attention, appearing in the New York Times, Discover Magazine, and National Geographic, and featured on broadcasts aired by the BBC, NPR, and CNN. He has published six papers in the top four interdisciplinary scientific journals in the world. Ofria is an active advisor and mentor who is rated very highly by his students. As a dedicated and successful teacher, he takes great care in designing courses to be useful and engaging for students and has been an inspirational influence in the classroom. He is director of the Digital Evolution (DEvo) Lab at Michigan State University, where his research focuses on the interplay between computer science and Darwinian evolution.
