Yi Chen is 2007 CSE Most Outstanding Graduate Student

Yi Chen is doctoral student in Computer Science and Engineering working in the field of biometrics under the guidance of Anil Jain. She received her B.S. in Computer Science from Sichuan University in China. Her research focuses upon fingerprint matching requiring expertise in image processing, pattern recognition, and statistical analysis. She has published many conference and journal papers, including one that has received a Motorola Best Student Paper Award, and a recent article in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (PAMI) on "Level 3 Features" that is likely to become a landmark paper in the field of fingerprint recognition. In 2006 alone, she is a co-author of five conference papers and six workshop presentations.

Besides her exceptional research, Yi is also recognized for her excellence in the classroom and her all-around contribution to MSU. In addition to pursuing her doctoral degree in computer science, she is also pursuing a master’s in statistics. She has taken 66 credits of graduate course work in computer science, mathematics, and statistics, and has a 3.97 GPA. Outside of the classroom, Yi is a model scholar and citizen. She often helps other students with their problems in mathematics and statistics, and she frequently volunteers as the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing (PRIP) Laboratory ambassador, organizing demonstrations for visiting students and scholars.
